The words
And now, O Father, mindful of the love
That bought us once for all, on Calvary’s tree,
And having with us him that pleads above,
We here present, we here spread forth to thee,
That only offering perfect in thine eyes,
The one true, pure, immortal sacrifice.
Look, Father, look on his anointed face,
And only look on us as found in him;
Look not on our misusings of thy grace,
Our prayer so languid, and our faith so dim;
For lo! between our sins and their reward,
We set the Passion of thy Son our Lord.
And then for those, our dearest and our best,
By this prevailing presence we appeal;
Oh, fold them closer to thy mercy’s breast!
Oh, do thine utmost for their souls’ true weal!
From tainting mischief keep them white and clear,
And crown thy gifts with strength to persevere.
And so we come; Oh, draw us to thy feet,
Most patient Saviour, who canst love us still!
And by this Food, so awful and so sweet,
Deliver us from every touch of ill:
In thine own service make us glad and free,
And grant us never more to part with thee.
How to sing it from the solfa
- Find doh first. Play or hum D and sing d r m f s up from it, so the whole choir has the key in their ears before you start.
- Pitch the first note. The tune starts on m (F♯), on the word “And”, as a pickup before the first full bar.
- Count the time. 4/4 means four crotchet beats in each bar. In the grid every cell is half a crotchet: a dash (–) holds the note before it, and _ is a rest.
- Know the notes. The tune uses d r m f s l t and the chromatic fe. A comma after a note (s,) is the octave below; an apostrophe (d') is the octave above.

Questions about And Now, O Father, Mindful of the Love

It starts on m (F♯ in D major), a pickup on the word “And” before the first full bar. Find doh first, then sing up or down to m.
Is And Now, O Father, Mindful of the Love in the public domain?
Yes. William Bright died in 1901, William Henry Monk died in 1889; the words were first published in 1874 and the music in 1875. Everyone named died before 1955 and both were published before 1929, so the hymn is out of copyright in the UK, the EU, the United States and Nigeria. Modern arrangements and translations can still be under copyright.
