Staff notation

The words

My God, permit me not to be
A stranger to myself and thee;
Amidst a thousand thoughts I rove
Forgetful of my highest love.

Why should my passions mix with earth,
And thus debase my heavenly birth?
Why should I cleave to things below,
And let my God, my Saviour go?

Call me away from flesh and sense,
One sovereign word can draw me thence;
I would obey the voice divine,
And all inferior joys resign.

Be earth with all her scenes withdrawn,
Let noise and vanity be gone;
In secret silence of the mind,
My heaven, and there my God I find.

How to sing it from the solfa

  • Find doh first. Play or hum Eb and sing d r m f s up from it, so the whole choir has the key in their ears before you start.
  • Pitch the first note. The tune starts on s (B♭), on the word “My”, as a pickup before the first full bar.
  • Count the time. 4/4 means four crotchet beats in each bar. In the grid every cell is half a crotchet: a dash (–) holds the note before it, and _ is a rest.
  • Know the notes. The tune uses d r m f s l t and the chromatic fe. A comma after a note (s,) is the octave below; an apostrophe (d') is the octave above.

About the hymn

Isaac Watts wrote these words for his Hymns and Spiritual Songs (1707), Book II, composed on divine subjects, hymn 122, headed “Retirement and meditation”.

Watts' hymns were printed without tunes and sung to any tune of their metre, Long Metre (8.8.8.8). This page sets the words to MELCOMBE; any other Long Metre tune fits them as well.

Questions about My God, Permit Me Not to Be

What is the doh of My God, Permit Me Not to Be?

In this version, in Eb major, doh is Eb. If your choir sings it in another key, doh moves to the new key note and every solfa syllable stays the same — that is what movable doh means.

It starts on s (B♭ in Eb major), a pickup on the word “My” before the first full bar. Find doh first, then sing up or down to s.

Is My God, Permit Me Not to Be in the public domain?

Yes. Isaac Watts died in 1748, Samuel Webbe died in 1816; the words were first published in 1707 and the music in 1782. Everyone named died before 1955 and both were published before 1929, so the hymn is out of copyright in the UK, the EU, the United States and Nigeria. Modern arrangements and translations can still be under copyright.
