The words
Through the day Thy love hath spared us,
Now we lay us down to rest;
Through the silent watches guard us,
Let no foe our peace molest:
Jesus, Thou our Guardian be;
Sweet it is to trust in Thee.
Pilgrims here on earth and strangers,
Dwelling in the midst of foes,
Us and ours preserve from dangers;
In Thine arms may we repose
And, when life’s sad day is past,
Rest with Thee in heaven at last.
Triune God, let all adore Thee,
Saints on earth and saints in heav’n;
Every creature bow before Thee,
Who hast all their being giv’n,
Who dost seek and save the lost:
Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
How to sing it from the solfa
- Find doh first. Play or hum G and sing d r m f s up from it, so the whole choir has the key in their ears before you start.
- Pitch the first note. The tune starts on d (G).
- Count the time. 4/4 means four crotchet beats in each bar. In the grid every cell is half a crotchet: a dash (–) holds the note before it, and _ is a rest.
- Know the notes. The tune uses d r m f s l t and the chromatic fe. A comma after a note (s,) is the octave below; an apostrophe (d') is the octave above.

About the hymn
Thomas Kelly wrote these words. They were printed in the Evangelical Lutheran Hymn-Book (St. Louis, 1927), as hymn 43.
The book printed the words without tunes, marked 8.7.8.7.7.7, to be sung to any tune of that metre. This page sets them to KALMAR; any other 8.7.8.7.7.7 tune fits them as well.
