The words

To Thee, O dear, dear Savior,
My spirit turns for rest,
My peace is in Thy favor,
My pillow on Thy breast;
Though all the world deceive me,
I know that I am Thine,
And Thou wilt never leave me,
O blessed Savior mine.

In Thee my trust abideth,
On Thee my hope relies,
O Thou whose love provideth
For all beneath the skies;
O Thou whose mercy found me,
From bondage set me free,
And then forever bound me
With threefold cords to Thee.

My grief is in the dulness
With which this sluggish heart
Doth open to the fulness
Of all Thou wouldst impart;
My joy is in Thy beauty
Of holiness divine,
My comfort in the duty
That binds my life in Thine.

Alas, that I should ever
Have failed in love to Thee,
The only One who never
Forgot or slighted me!
Oh, for a heart to love Thee
More truly as I ought
And nothing place above Thee
In deed or word or thought!

Oh, for that choicest blessing
Of living in Thy love
And thus on earth possessing
The peace of heaven above!
Oh, for the bliss that by it
The soul securely knows
The holy calm and quiet
Of faith’s serene repose!

How to sing it from the solfa

  • Find doh first. Play or hum G and sing d r m f s up from it, so the whole choir has the key in their ears before you start.
  • Pitch the first note. The tune starts on m (B), on the word “To”, as a pickup before the first full bar.
  • Count the time. 4/4 means four crotchet beats in each bar. In the grid every cell is half a crotchet: a dash (–) holds the note before it, and _ is a rest.
  • Know the notes. The tune uses d r m f s l t and the chromatic re. A comma after a note (s,) is the octave below; an apostrophe (d') is the octave above.

About the hymn

John Samuel Bewley Monsell wrote these words. They were printed in the Evangelical Lutheran Hymn-Book (St. Louis, 1927), as hymn 371.

The book printed the words without tunes, marked Sevens and Sixes Double (7.6.7.6.7.6.7.6), to be sung to any tune of that metre. This page sets them to ANGEL'S STORY; any other Sevens and Sixes Double tune fits them as well.

Tune ANGEL'S STORY by Arthur Henry Mann (1850–1929); words by John Samuel Bewley Monsell (1811–1875).

Sung to the same tune: “Come unto Me, Ye Weary, Ere God Had Built the Mountains, Go When the Morning Shineth, In the Broad Fields of Heaven, O Jesus, I Have Promised, O Son of God, Afflicted, Through Jesus’ Blood and Merit, To Thee, My God and Saviour, To-day Thy Mercy Calls Us, When, His Salvation Bringing.
