The words

Another hand is beckoning us,
Another call is given;
And glows once more with angel steps
The path that leads to heaven.

O, half we deemed she needed not
The changing of her sphere,
To give to heaven a shining one,
Who walked an angel here.

Unto our Father's will alone
One thought hath reconciled;
That He whose love exceedeth ours
Hath taken home his child.

Fold her, O Father, in thine arms,
And let her henceforth be
A messenger of love between
Our human hearts and Thee.

Still let her mild rebukings stand
Between us and the wrong,
And her dear memory serve to make
Our faith in goodness strong.

How to sing it from the solfa

  • Find doh first. Play or hum F and sing d r m f s up from it, so the whole choir has the key in their ears before you start.
  • Pitch the first note. The tune starts on d (F), on the first syllable of “Another”, as a pickup before the first full bar.
  • Count the time. 4/4 means four crotchet beats in each bar. In the grid every cell is half a crotchet: a dash (–) holds the note before it, and _ is a rest.
  • Know the notes. The tune uses d r m f s l and the chromatic fe. A comma after a note (s,) is the octave below; an apostrophe (d') is the octave above.

About the hymn

John Greenleaf Whittier wrote these words. They were printed in A Book of Hymns for Public and Private Devotion, compiled by Samuel Longfellow and Samuel Johnson (Boston, 1848), as hymn 404, “Not Lost, But Gone Before”.

The book printed the words without tunes, marked Common Metre (8.6.8.6), to be sung to any tune of that metre. This page sets them to YORK; any other Common Metre tune fits them as well.
