The words

The men who slight thy faithful word,
In their own lies confide,
These are the temple of the Lord,
And heathens all beside!

The temple of the Lord are these.
The only church and true,
Who live in pomp, and wealth, and ease,
And Jesus never knew.

The temple of the Lord - they pull
Thy living temples down,
And cast out every gracious soul
That trembles at thy frown:

O wouldst thou, Lord, reveal their sins,
And turn their joy to grief,
The world, the Christian world, convince
Of damning unbelief!

The formalists confound, convert,
And to thy people join;
And break, and fill the broken heart
With confidence divine!

How to sing it from the solfa

  • Find doh first. Play or hum F and sing d r m f s up from it, so the whole choir has the key in their ears before you start.
  • Pitch the first note. The tune starts on d (F), on the word “The”, as a pickup before the first full bar.
  • Count the time. 4/4 means four crotchet beats in each bar. In the grid every cell is half a crotchet: a dash (–) holds the note before it, and _ is a rest.
  • Know the notes. The tune uses d r m f s l and the chromatic fe. A comma after a note (s,) is the octave below; an apostrophe (d') is the octave above.

About the hymn

Charles Wesley wrote these words. His brother John printed them in A Collection of Hymns for the Use of the People Called Methodists (1780), hymn 94.

The book printed the words without tunes. They are in Common Metre (8.6.8.6), and this page sets them to YORK; any other Common Metre tune fits them as well.
