The words

Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah,
Pilgrim through this barren land;
I am weak, but Thou art mighty;
Hold me with Thy powerful hand:
Bread of heaven, bread of heaven,
Feed me till I want no more;
Feed me till I want no more.

Open now the crystal fountain,
Whence the healing stream doth flow;
Let the fire and cloudy pillar
Lead me all my journey through:
Strong Deliverer, strong Deliverer,
Be Thou still my strength and shield;
Be Thou still my strength and shield.

When I tread the verge of Jordan,
Bid my anxious fears subside;
Death of death, and hell’s destruction,
Land me safe on Canaan’s side:
Songs of praises, songs of praises,
I will ever give to Thee;
I will ever give to Thee.

How to sing it from the solfa

  • Find doh first. Play or hum G and sing d r m f s up from it, so the whole choir has the key in their ears before you start.
  • Pitch the first note. The tune starts on s, (D).
  • Count the time. 4/4 means four crotchet beats in each bar. In the grid every cell is half a crotchet: a dash (–) holds the note before it, and _ is a rest.
  • Know the notes. The tune uses d r m f s l t. A comma after a note (s,) is the octave below; an apostrophe (d') is the octave above.

About the hymn

William Williams of Pantycelyn, the great hymn writer of the Welsh revival, wrote the hymn in Welsh. Peter Williams translated the first verse into English in 1771, and William Williams himself wrote the English verses that follow.

The tune CWM RHONDDA was written by John Hughes in 1907 for a singing festival in Pontypridd, Wales; it is the tune most churches now sing these words to. The last line of every verse is sung twice.

  • Welsh words (1745); English verses 2 and 3 (1772): William Williams (1717–1791)
  • English translation of verse 1 (1771): Peter Williams (1723–1796)
  • Melody (1907): John Hughes (1873–1932)
