The words
He came to earth who came from God,
And left in heaven His blest abode,
And all the joy He had;
To share our lot, and all its woe,
And wander homeless here below,
All sorrowing and sad.
He came to earth who came from God,
And ah! our rugged paths He trod,
And faint, and tired, and lone,
He bore the burden of our guilt,
And on a Cross His blood was spilt
For sinners to atone.
He went to God who came to earth;
Now sing the new creation's birth,
And mankind born again;
For death is dead, and He who lives,
Eternal life to mortals gives,
The Faithful, True, Amen.
How to sing it from the solfa
- Find doh first. Play or hum G and sing d r m f s up from it, so the whole choir has the key in their ears before you start.
- Pitch the first note. The tune starts on s, (D), on the word “He”, as a pickup before the first full bar.
- Count the time. 4/4 means four crotchet beats in each bar. In the grid every cell is half a crotchet: a dash (–) holds the note before it, and _ is a rest.
- Know the notes. The tune uses d r m f s l t. A comma after a note (s,) is the octave below; an apostrophe (d') is the octave above.

About the hymn
John Brownlie translated these words from the Greek service books for Hymns from the Greek Office Books (Paisley, 1904).
The book printed the words without tunes. They are in Common Particular Metre (8.8.6.8.8.6), and this page sets them to HOLY MATRIMONY; any other Common Particular Metre tune fits them as well.
