The words
Now sin with reign unbroken,
no more can rule my life,
Since God the Word hath spoken,
That wins for me the strife;
Baptized, reborn by grace
I am redeem'd from evil,
And have renounced the devil
and all his works and ways.
How can I rightly treasure
My Savior's death for me,
When seeking worldly pleasure,
I turn to that in glee?
Oh, lest I go astray
And unto sin surrender,
Dear Lord, be my Defender,
My Life, my Light, my Way.
What profits Easter morning,
The temple curtain rent,
When I neglect God's warning
To pray and to repent,
When wandering abroad
And yeilding to temptation,
I lose my soul's salvation,
My home, my hope, my God.
My Jesus and my Savior,
My Friend, my soul's delight
Oh help me not to waver,
Though Adam offers fight!
Help me to hate all sin,
And with the utmost candor
My heart to Thee Surrender,
The crown of life to win.
How to sing it from the solfa
- Find doh first. Play or hum F and sing d r m f s up from it, so the whole choir has the key in their ears before you start.
- Pitch the first note. The tune starts on d (F), on the word “Now”, as a pickup before the first full bar.
- Count the time. 4/4 means four crotchet beats in each bar. In the grid every cell is half a crotchet: a dash (–) holds the note before it, and _ is a rest.
- Know the notes. The tune uses d r m f s — only 5 different notes, so it is a good one for a choir new to solfa. A comma after a note (s,) is the octave below; an apostrophe (d') is the octave above.

Questions about Now Sin, with Reign Unbroken
What is the doh of Now Sin, with Reign Unbroken?
In this version, in F major, doh is F. If your choir sings it in another key, doh moves to the new key note and every solfa syllable stays the same — that is what movable doh means.
What note does Now Sin, with Reign Unbroken start on?
It starts on d (F in F major), a pickup on the word “Now” before the first full bar. Find doh first, then sing up or down to d.
Is Now Sin, with Reign Unbroken in the public domain?
Yes. Thomas Hansen Kingo died in 1703, Paul Christian Paulsen died in 1948, David Wolder died in 1604; the words were first published in 1927 and the music in 1598. Everyone named died before 1955 and both were published before 1929, so the hymn is out of copyright in Nigeria, the UK, the EU and the United States. Modern arrangements and translations can still be under copyright.
