The words

This is the fast the Lord doth choose;
Each heavy burden to undo,
The bands of wickedness to loose,
And bid the captive freely go.

Let every vile and sinful yoke
Of servile bondage and of fear,
By mercy, love and truth be broke;
And from each eye wipe every tear.

Yes, to the hungry deal thy bread;
Bring to thine house the outcast poor;
There let the fainting soul be fed,
Nor spurn the needy from thy door.

And when thou seest the naked, spare
The raiment that his wants demand;
Since all mankind thy kindred are,
To all thy charity expand.

Thus did the Saviour of our race:
Himself, the Bread of Life, he gave;
He clothed us with his righteousness,
And broke the fetters from the slave.

How to sing it from the solfa

  • Find doh first. Play or hum E and sing d r m f s up from it, so the whole choir has the key in their ears before you start.
  • Pitch the first note. The tune starts on d (E), on the word “This”, as a pickup before the first full bar.
  • Count the time. 4/4 means four crotchet beats in each bar. In the grid every cell is half a crotchet: a dash (–) holds the note before it, and _ is a rest.
  • Know the notes. The tune uses d r m f s l t. A comma after a note (s,) is the octave below; an apostrophe (d') is the octave above.

About the hymn

Hosea Ballou wrote these words. They were printed in Hymns for Christian Devotion, compiled by John G. Adams and Edwin H. Chapin (Boston, 1846), as hymn 868 of its twenty-second edition (1853), “The Acceptable Fast”.

The book printed the words without tunes, marked Long Metre (8.8.8.8), to be sung to any tune of that metre. This page sets them to UXBRIDGE; any other Long Metre tune fits them as well.

Sung to the same tune: 'Tis Done; the Great Transaction's Done, 'Twas by an Order from the Lord, 'Twas for Thy Sake, Eternal God, A Crown of Gold Surpassing Rare, Affliction's Faded Form Draws Nigh, Ah Lord, with Trembling I Confess, Alas! Elisha's Servant Cried, Almighty King! Whose Wondrous Hand, Almighty Ruler of the Skies, An Awful Mystery Is Here, Another Day Its Course Hath Run, Arise, My Soul, and Gaily Sing, As Once for Jonah, So the Lord, Author of Faith, Eternal Word, Author of Faith, We Seek Thy Face, Be Still My Heart!
