The words
All people that on earth do dwell,
Sing to the Lord with cheerful voice;
Him serve with mirth, his praise forth tell,
Come ye before him and rejoice.
The Lord, ye know, is God indeed;
Without our aid he did us make;
We are his folk, he doth us feed,
And for his sheep he doth us take.
O enter then his gates with praise,
Approach with joy his courts unto;
Praise, laud, and bless his name always,
For it is seemly so to do.
For why? the Lord our God is good;
His mercy is for ever sure;
His truth at all times firmly stood,
And shall from age to age endure.
Doxology
To Father, Son and Holy Ghost,
The God whom heaven and earth adore,
From men and from the angel host
Be praise and glory evermore.
A closing doxology added in later psalters.
How to sing it from the solfa
- Find doh first. Play or hum G and sing d r m f s up from it, so the whole choir has the key in their ears before you start.
- Pitch the first note. The tune starts on d (G).
- Count the time. 4/4 means four crotchet beats in each bar. In the grid every cell is half a crotchet: a dash (–) holds the note before it, and _ is a rest.
- Know the notes. The tune uses d r m f s l t. A comma after a note (s,) is the octave below; an apostrophe (d') is the octave above.

About the hymn
William Kethe's paraphrase of Psalm 100 was printed in the Anglo-Genevan psalter of 1561, and it has been sung to this tune ever since — the reason the melody is called OLD HUNDREDTH. It is the same tune as the Doxology, so a choir that can sing one can sing the other.
- Words, a paraphrase of Psalm 100 (1561): William Kethe (died 1594)
- Melody, Genevan Psalter (1551): Louis Bourgeois (1510–1560)
Sung to the same tune: Be Present at Our Table, Lord, Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow (Doxology).
Questions about All People That on Earth Do Dwell
What is the doh of All People That on Earth Do Dwell?
In this version, in G major, doh is G. If your choir sings it in another key, doh moves to the new key note and every solfa syllable stays the same — that is what movable doh means.
What note does All People That on Earth Do Dwell start on?
It starts on d (G in G major). Find doh first, then sing up or down to d.
Is All People That on Earth Do Dwell in the public domain?
Yes. William Kethe died in 1594, Louis Bourgeois died in 1560; the words were first published in 1561 and the music in 1551. Everyone named died before 1955 and both were published before 1929, so the hymn is out of copyright in Nigeria, the UK, the EU and the United States. Modern arrangements and translations can still be under copyright.
